The AUdioEngine A5+ Speakers have been reviewed extensively around the web. It was hard to say if they really were better because after all, you have to experience them yourself in order to make that judgement on your own. I have had expensive, really expensive speakers in the past and were rated so highly by some folks but found that they were not all that they were said to be. I received my speakers via fedex Home delivery and they were packaged really well. The speakers come in their own cloth bag and even had thin foam sheeting wrapped around them inside the bag. Nice touch. Hooking up the speakers was easy......the speakers are just about almost too big for a desktop speaker.....but still are desktop friendly. I decided to put my A5+'s on a dedicated shelf on the wall. You do need to have at least 6 inches behind the speakers open for proper bass response. The sound of these speakers are much better than my Bose Companion 3's and better than the Companion 5's that I had tried in the past. The sound is more natural and more neutral than the Bose's. The bass on these speakers is not too heavy and if you really want a heavy bass, then a sub woofer is available and there are connections on the right speaker for a sub woofer if you want it. I would highly recommend the AudioEngine A5+ speakers. They are the speakers to get if you want great sound. Read full review

Sound quality if fairly good, not equal to non-powered speakers in the same price range. There is a low static hum when it is connected to another source and this has been reported in many forums. It cannot be reconciled typically with a noise filter on your power outlet or using a separate outlet (or same as the source). The hum was louder until broken in, now it is still audible at low volume but disappears at higher volume.

I was looking for a new set of pc speakers to replace my old Altec Lansing ACS52s. While the Altecs were still working good, I wanted to upgrade to something a little better. I did a bunch of research and read even more reviews. I finally decided on the Audioengine A5+ speakers. These were on the high side of what I wanted to spend, but if they last as long as my Altecs, it will be money well spent. Thought I would give ebay a chance to see if I could snag a set cheaper than retail. As luck would have it, I did. These speakers are well constructed and use quality materials. The fit and finish is good as they should be for a sub $500 pair of speakers. I prefer the look of wood and the bamboo fit the bill. Wood looks so much better than plastic anyway. While I am no audiophile by any means, but these speakers sound incredible so far. I am running these speakers off a sound card in my pc. I have played many different cds from contemporary to rock as well as a couple of games. In my opinion, the bass is good but not overpowering and the highs are crisp and clean. If you need more bass, Audioengine has a sub available for purchase. While I have yet to play a movie, cannot vouch how voices will sound. From my experience so far with these speakers, I would find it hard to believe that voices would be anything but good. I know audiophiles would have different opinions on these speakers, but most of us do not have the cash to spend on high end speakers. While these speakers are quite pricey in my opinion, I still have to recommend them. Read full review

Pricey little gems. Can't fault the sound quality out of this size unit. I purchased them to use with my 42 inch; flat screen tv (LG) which had very poor sound quality from the built in speakers. There is no RCA audio out, so I run them out of the headphone jack. Very nice sound and bass is deep enough for me without a subwoofer (I don't need to shake the furniture and rattle the windows as some folks prefer). As in many things, you get what you pay for, and these speakers are no exception. Considering how much use they get, I don't regret the expense. Great for voice, music, movies, sports, etc. The only negative is that the blue pilot light does not have to be so bright and conspicuous (but it is better than some other well known brands); not a big deal as it is not really distracting but worth a one-star downgrade.Read full review
I have been using these for a little more than 2 weeks now and they have performed better than I had expected. I knew they would be good but they have truly impressed me. The packaging was very unique, each speaker having their own cloth bag. The speakers themselves are very heavy and solid. You can tell the quality through feel alone and visually the speakers are fantastic. Set up is a breeze and I was listening to my favorite tracks within 5 minutes. Included are all cables to get you started as well as an RCA to 1/8" adapter (standard A5 does not have RCA in, however the A5+ does). With every song, played through my digital library, I was carried away by the amazing quality and surprisingly rich bass. The volume knob seems to never end and I have yet to reach the maximum level for fear of disturbing the neighbors. When aligned with my turntable and preamp, sound quality remains and the internal amplifier does a fine job of picking up each sound and reproducing it. Although there are better speakers out there, you should prepare to take a major hit in the bank in order to enjoy them. For the price, there is nothing better than the Audioengine line up (including the A5+ and P4 passive speakers.) Tested with LPs through a Pro-Ject Debut III & Bellari VP129 preamp as well as digital tracks through an Audioengine D1 DAC.Read full review
