About this product

Product Information

The love story of the Emperor Vespasian, who brought peace to Rome after years of strife, and his mistress, the freed slave woman Antonia Caenis, this book recreates Ancient Rome's most turbulent period - the reigns of Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero, and Vespasian's rise to power. As their forbidden romance blossoms, she is embroiled in political intrigue, while he embarks on a glorious career. Years pass, then Vespasian risks all in the climatic struggle for power - bringing hope for Rome, but a threat to the relationship that has endured so long.

  • It was an interesting read.

Not actually as compelling as her Falco Roman Detective series. Having read them there was no mystery for me about the plot. So read it before you start on Falco. She goes to great trouble with her Roman detail but some details of Rome are unpleasant. It covers there version of slavery which is rather different from the American south that we are more familiar with. Roman slaves could be freed and often were either in owners wills or by saving up themselves! There is a bit of military campaign detail. Side trips to other parts of Europe, North Africa etc. Sort of romance and historical education at the same time.

  • Lindsey Davis -

This is my favourite book so far by the author. Now on her 10th book and working chronologically through them. I am not one for history novels but she writes with humour and you can see & smell Rome and hear the characters and I love a murder mystery. 10/10
