Synopsis
For the people of Byzantium, their architectural works, frescoes, mosaics, ivories, chalices, bejeweled gospel covers and many other opulent works of art were the material proof of their greatness and power over the Mediterranean states. The vast range of these riches is illustrated in this complete account of Byzantine art from the reign of Justinian to the fall of Constantinople. David Talbot Rice, one of the greatest authorities on Byzantine art, traveled as far afield as the rock churches of Cappadocia and Cilicia, the tufa monuments of Armenia and Georgia, and the thirteenth-century ceramic factories of Bulgaria, now buried in the alluvial mud of the Danube. His book is a masterly survey of an art of magnificence and power that belonged to a great and sophisticated society., For the people of Byzantium, their architectural works, frescoes, mosaics, ivories, chalices, bejewelled gospel covers and qlany other opulent works of art were the material proof of their greatness and power over the Mediterranean states. • This work focuses on the time period of 330AD to 1435AD, mostly the images shared are Christianized.

This work focuses on the time period of 330AD to 1435AD, mostly the images shared are Christianized. The older works shown are often varied and disguised because of damage to those. The works are described by the art style based on location of the makers for those works, the images have been given approximate 'creation' dates, plus image information describing what is shown. The artistic style information is in corresponding paragraphs. If you want a larger overview of ancient images, with less religious focus, another book can be better.

    • Historic art lovers.

Concise historical view of Byzantine art. I was somewhat disappointed in seeing so many black and white pictures instead of color plates.

    • Good summary of medieval Byzantine art

This book has plenty of pictures in colour and b/w. Many different art forms are covered, and also different regions. I wanted to read about the art, the visual side of Byzantine civilisation, and I can certainly recommend this book for that purpose. However, bear in mind it is a reprint of a book from 1963 (though I believe it was revised in 1985), and so it is wise to look into more recent scholarship for any changes in opinion on this or that item that may or may not have happened since then.
