Silly, funny romantic comedy
This is a screwball comedy, which by definition should not be taken seriously, but the plot is sillier than most. Lucy and Jerry (Irene Dunne, Cary Grant) have an argument and decide on the spot to get divorced. They go to court and are told that the divorce will be final after 90 days. After 30 days (the film frequently mentions how much time is left), Lucy meets a man from Oklahoma and two days later they are engaged. Less than 30 days later, Jerry meets a woman and gets engaged. On the eve of the divorce finalization, Lucy goes to a party at the home of Jerry's fiancee's parents and pretends to be his drunken showgirl sister, so he hustles her out of there. She continues to pretend to be drunk, I guess so he will drive her home instead of just leaving her there in her car. But when the ... Dunne & Grant have great romantic chemistry, which saves the film, and ALMOST kept me from wondering why these two people are behaving so immaturely, hurting each other --- and the two fiances! --- not to mention their dog. It also seemed unbelievable that two people who secretly still love each other, and who are not yet legally divorced, could have both met other people within the space of two months and gotten engaged. But if you love Cary Grant, this is a must-see, especially the final scene.

Lovely black and white chick flick. I am working my way through old screwball romantic comedies, and this was recommended as one of the best. It's about a couple that decides to divorce, only to discover that they love each other anyway. In its day it was very racy, full of double entendre and sexual innuendo. The chemistry between Grant and Dunn is a delight, and very funny. The poor dears can't keep their hands off of one another. But in 2008 it comes across as cute and quaint, rather than tittilating. Don't look for any deep messages about love or life here, as in "An Affair to Remember." This is pure silly fun. It might be a good movie to help you seduce your wife (with a little help from Cary Grant). Might be good to help you seduce your husband too girls, if you can keep ...
