For voice, it's a great phone and easy use. Data service is available, but you should really look at other equipment if you want reliable data comms. Because Inmarsat uses stationary satellites, it requires you to have an unobstructed view of the satellite’s location. There are only three, but knowing where it is can be a challenge at times. I keep a small compass with each phone to help. It's a great value for satcom voice use outdoors. Voice quality is fair, SMS works ok outbound, but requires a email address for return, which is not clearly explained (a SMS recipient cannot simply "reply" to your SMS), If you are wanting to use it inside a building, the only external antenna is via a $1200 docking station. If you want to use it in a wide variety of locations, consider the Iridium system and phones. Price out the accessories you need (external antenna etc) to see if it's a more cost effective solution. Update 10/2012: An external antenna for around $350US is now available which takes the sting out of the $1200US docking station. Do a search on 'Isatphone Pro external antenna' Haven't tried it yet, but it's an approved accessory so I'm guessing that it probably works OK. Still....the Iridium 9555 cradle and external antenna is still only around $100US and I've had good luck using it indoors with additional cable.Read full review
This is an excellent phone, but you do need to stick to parts of the work covered by its network. The network has great coverage around the equator in Asia but when I took it further north, into Kazakhstan, Tajikistan... the coverage was not as great and often I could not make a call at all. Familiarize yourself with the global satellite coverage areas before purchasing, if this network doesn't cut it then look at other devices that use the much more extensive iridium network.

Excellent phone. Ordered the valid, but no longer sold, 110 unit prepaid Sim Card which expires at the end of 2014. It has worked fine so far, but I do not know if I will start to pay for monthly service after the Sim Card expires. Look up decent rates before buying, and make sure that you are 100% comfortable with paying for them. It takes a little while to get signal sometimes, especially when the antenna is folded away and then put back up, so the best bet is to search for the satellite right after starting up the phone.
Took a little while to get to NSW but the guys did a brilliant job tracking this for me and letting me know when it cleared customs - great followup emails etc when I had some queries Excellent service - deserve to be successful!!
Initial problems with commissioning but otherwise great
