    The Flamingo Kid

This was a fairly good flick as it kept me somewhat interested throughout. I have been a fan of Matt Dillon through the years as this movie was worth the watch!

  • Top critical review

Flamingo Kid is a great view of life in NY in the early 1960s

The movie is GREAT. A real nice picture of life in the 1960s in the NY / Long Island area. Humorous. After watching Matt Dillon in films like the Outsiders, I was not a fan. This movie made me a fan. He has a gift for comedy as we see again in Something About Mary. The quality of the DVD, case and inner notes is below average (almost like it was duplicated)

  • A coming of age story that's a classic!

In this film by Garry Marshall, teen angst abounds in the 1950s. Jeffrey is mesmerized by the wealth and influence he sees at hi summer job, which is at an exclusive beach club on the East Coast. In fact, the blue collar job his father holds no longer seems respectable when a local businessman takes Jeffrey under his wing. Soon, the facade is over and Jeffrey realizes his mistake when the man no longer has use for him. In the end, Jeffrey realizes the value of his family and respects his father. Throughout the film, there are lots of funny scenes that make the movie quite entertaining to watch. Jeffrey's love interest, Janet Jones (in the days before sports betting scandals) is adequate in the role, but doesn't match Matt Dillon's talent. For anyone who grew up in the 50s or has ...

  • Young Matt Dillon Shines

I believe Matt Dillon won an Oscar for his role in the movie Crash (if not, my bad, I know he was nominated). He has always been one of my favorite actors as he grew up (and I grew up with him as well), being a punk/prick at times but doing it in cool ways that make you still like the guy. This movie shows why I liked him so much when he was younger (and when I was I younger also, but I still like him now), I actually grew up with him in a cinematic sense. Matt Dillon plays Jeffrey, an 18 year old kid from Brooklyn (he doesn't really look 18, but who cares) who plans on working in an office all summer. This is set up by his father who has big plans for him. Being a plumber all his life, he doesn't want to see Jeffrey make the same mistakes that he did. He wants him to get experience ...

  • catchy title makes me wonder who is the Flamingo Kid

This is walk down memory lane-back to the early 1960's.It is a period piece but basically the theme holds true for today.Parents still want the same things for their kids, and kids don't want to be like their parents.Young Matt Dillon is right on character as the son of a plumber(Hector Elasandro)who side steps the job his dad has found for him for the summer,to work at a beach country club.Richard Crenna plays the rummy playing car dealer, who makes an impression on the "Kid".At the club he learns the hard lessons of youth. Not everything or everyone is as good as it seems, and the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. When things don't work out right ,it is family who you can rely on to be there for you. I enjoy this film ,it has superb acting and a good story line.I ...
