Agetec's brawler/construction kit Fighter Maker is a quasi-game that's sure to have amateur game programmers squealing in delight. Fighter Maker features a complete 3D character posing system -- think of it as a simplified version of Kinetix's Character Studio R2 for 3D Studio MAX. If creating your own fighters sounds a little on the complicated side of things, don't worry as the developers have included a 68-page manual that thoroughly outlines various details as well as in-game help menus and demonstrations.<br><br>Not only will you give your fighters detailed profiles outlining their past histories, fighting motions, and logical AI, you'll also have the freedom of creation by selecting one of 20 different models and editing everything from wardrobe and muscle tone to hair and skin color. You can alter your fighters' poses to make them stand up after being taken down or begin fighting from a crouched position. There's even a series of fixed positions and wrist combinations.<br><br>Once the character standing before you on the screen looks like the fighter of your dreams, it's time to program a series of devastating fighting moves and combinations. Choosing anything from basic movements (166 unique patterns) and hit sequences to throws, crouching dashes, and downward attacks, selecting the correct moves and understanding how they work is vital to the fighter's success. There are over 800 different moves in all and you'll also want to balance damage values between high, mid-level, and low attacks, as well as combination lengths, fighting delays, and your fighter's position after a move is executed (back towards the opponent or facing him).

Look, mom, I can make my guy throw a Hadoken with his feet! No Hands!
This game is one of a few interesting sidenotes of a console system. Basically, the ablity to create custom user-based content was unheard of on consoles in 1999 and still an untested feature. This is one of two games that I'm aware of (the other being RPG maker) for the PS1 that had the ability to allow the user some freedom of ingenuity. You can make your fighter do whatever moves you want. Cool, right? Unfortunately the execution is the issue. Yes, you can make your fighter do your moves. Trouble is, your fighter has to be one of the existing fighter skins. Also further causing some minor issues is the fact that the fighters are necessarily very achetypical stereotype fighters (karate gi guy with headband, ninja, wrestler, and yes, sadly, the token black guy, complete with afro) and ... This game is a neat find, and worthy enough to merit a sequel for the PS2. If you're a hardcore fighter fan who wants his fighter to do HIS moves, pick this up. It may be like watching a kung fu movie... with librarians... but still worth a few bucks.

Plays perfectly.
I got the game as is, and I've had no problems in the time I used this product. Plays nice and smoothly. Infinite fun to be had with full customization of your character, provided you have a memory card to save your character on (I was foolish enough not to have one in the first place).
