In Mike Nichols's hilarious remake of the 1978 French comedy LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, Robin Williams stars as Armand Goldman, a gay cabaret owner who lives in Miami's South Beach with his partner, Albert (Nathan Lane), the club's star performer. Armand and Albert must try in vain to pass as a typical couple when the prospective in-laws of Armand's son, Val (Dan Futterman), come for dinner. While accepting their alternative lifestyle personally, Val demands that they tone it down for his girlfriend's (Calista Flockhart) parents--who happen to be a political couple running on a family values platform. Lane's hilarious attempts to "play it straight" and Hank Azaria's brilliantly flamboyant houseboy, Agador, are the highlights of the film, which also features a beautifully understated Williams as the more "normal" of the pair. Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest are delightfully square as the future in-laws.

    A Contemporary Classic

    This is a wonderful film, smart and funny, very much of its time but somehow, nearly 20 years later, it hardly feels dated. In fact, its satire of conservatism is as topical now as ever. The casting is inspired and the acting superb, especially on the part of Nathan Lane and Robin Williams. (May the latter R.I.P.) This VHS version is a digital transfer and looks very much like the DVD that was released simultaneously. It is in Full Screen format but loses just a sliver off the sides from the Widescreen version. I purchased a still sealed copy and it plays perfectly. If memory serves, this one contains only a few, if any, previews before the film.

    I love this movie! It's one of my favorites! I love Robin Williams and Nathan lane! Nathan does such a great job with his character and so does Robin Williams! They make such a great couple in the movie! The movie is so funny! I highly recommend this movie!

    A joyful, hilarious movie you will enjoy!!

    I purchased The Birdcage video as a Christmas gift for a friend. We've both seen the movie many times and have always loved it! I also own a copy that I purchased from eBay. You cannot go wrong when viewing this movie, it is hilarious, to say the least! Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are esceptionally funny and so true to their characters. A movie the entire family could enjoy.
