About this product

Product Information

January 1937. Twenty-eight year old Jack is poor, lonely and desperate to change his life. So when he's offered the chance to be the wireless operator on an Arctic expedition, he jumps at it. Spirits are high as the ship leaves Norway: five men and eight huskies, crossing the Barents Sea by the light of the midnight sun. At last they reach the remote, uninhabited bay where they will camp for the next year. Gruhuken. But the Arctic summer is brief. As night returns to claim the land, Jack feels a creeping unease. One by one, his companions are forced to leave. Soon he will see the last of the sun, as the polar night engulfs the camp in months of darkness. Soon he will reach the point of no return - when the sea will freeze, making escape impossible. But Gruhuken is not uninhabited. Jack is not alone. Something walks there in the dark.

Very happy indeed, I messaged 5 sellers to ask if something I wanted was in the book, this seller was the only one who would pick up the book and take a look, not only was he helpful, his replies were very quick. Delivery was super fast and with excellent packaging. The book was just as described, and a fair price. I would happily buy again from here. Thank you again

Wow! Amazingly fast delivery, book thundered through my letter flap less than 24 hours after I placed my order. All in all, an excellent transaction. Great copy of The Girls of Rose Dormitory by Joy Francis, exactly as described, sold for a very reasonable price, safely and securely packed, sent and received astonishingly quickly. All good! Highly recommended seller.

  • An excellent late night read

This is the third Michelle Paver novel I have read and all I can say is, if you like a dark, atmospheric well composed ghost story then buy this book. Check out Wakenhyrst and Thin Air also. All great reads.

  • The best ghost story in years.

I don't like ghost stories. But this tale was strangely evocative. The protagonist is a great narrator, and his self-doubt and mounting terror are superbly portrayed.
