Le DAO est le premier dictionnaire omasiologique de l'ancien occitan. Il suit un classement par concepts (d'apres le systeme conceptuel de Hallig-Wartburg) du lexique de la France meridionale sur la base de textes s'etalant des premiers documents jusqu'au milieu du 16e siecle. Il reunit de maniere systematique, tant sur le plan lexical que morphologique, les moyens d'expression de l'ancien occitan correspondant a une tion donnee. Cle omasiologique des deux grands dictionnaires de Rayuard et de Levy, il completera ces derniers par un grand mbre de references uvelles acquises dans le cadre de recherches plus recentes. Cette approche omasiologique, par la relation etablie entre les mots et les choses, considere et integre davantage la langue n-litteraire jusqu'ici quelque peu negligee. Le DAO est le premier dictionnaire qui tient compte de tous les idiomes du Midi de la France: en relevant la scripta occitane/gasconne, le latin medieval et le francais regional, il reflete integralement la situation linguistique plurilingue qui regnait au Moyen age dans le domaine occitan. Der DAO ist das erste nach Sachgruppen geordnete Worterbuch der altokzitanischen Sprache von den Anfangen ihrer Schriftlichkeit bis zur Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Er bildet den omasiologischen Schlussel zu den beiden groen altokzitanischen Worterbuchern von Rayuard und Levy, deren Wortschatz durch die Erschlieung neuen Quellenmaterials in umfangreichem Mae erganzt und aktualisiert wird. Er zielt auf die Wiedergabe des gesamten Sprachsystems einer Epoche ab: unter Berucksichtigung der mehrsprachigen Situation Sudfrankreichs erfasst der DAO zusatzlich die mittellateinischen und regionalfranzosischen Idiome und bietet somit die vollstandigste verfugbare Information zur gesamten linguistischen Situation im mittelalterlichen Sudfrankreich. Poursuivre deux objectifs a la fois, l'objectif occitan general et l'objectif gascon, impliquait une progression par trop lente sur chacun des domaines. Un changement d'orientation vers l'ancien gascon, d'ailleurs fidele a l'esprit et a la genese du DAO/DAG (Kurt Baldinger a concu l'entreprise comme un dictionnaire de l'ancien gascon), apparait comme une tache plus actuelle que jamais. Un projet resserre, dote de l'objectif de decrire l'ancien gascon en lui-meme, et progressant plus vite, contribuera a realiser un produit coherent et maitrisable qui apportera, par ses depouillements etendus de sources primaires, un grand mbre de faits uveaux significatifs. Sous la perspective omasiologique, retenue depuis le debut pas le projet, le DAG uvelle formule a partir du domaine A IV b Les oiseaux, continuera a donner une version d'ensemble organique des moyens d'expression lexicaux de la langue des chartes medievales gasconnes.
