Jeff Bridges is a self absorbed radio personality who in almost every way has no personality at all. He is a Howard Stern type who belittles and talks down to everybody. He thinks that he is the most important thing next to ice-cream but in reality he is just another foul mouthed liberal who is being paid too much. One day in his typical "Go to Hell" style he starts ranting about nothing and some nut case hears him and takes it seriously. He goes to a local hot spot and opens fire, killing a bunch of people. Instantly, Jack Lucas's (Bridges) career is in free-fall. His sponsors want a rope around his neck, and the world completely turns it's back on him. Within three years, he is broke, suicidal, and in a troubled relationship with his girlfriend and instead of a million dollar apartment , he is living over a video rental store. Almost a total alcoholic, one night he gets jumped by thugs, and just as they are about to set him on fire, is rescued by a group of homeless people who look and act like lunatics. When he wakes up in the morning he is in a sub-basement of an apartment building with a crazy, but harmless guy maned Parry (Robin Williams). Jack soon finds out that Parry, despite his present situation, was once a college professor, and was married to a beautiful girl whom he loved terribly, but she was murdered by a nut case in a popular hot spot because of what some arrogant shock-jock said! He realized that he was responsible for the destruction of this man's life. Now desperate for personal redemption, all he can think of is how to make it right once again. In doing so, he attempts to help Parry win the love of a goofy girl with whom he is totally smitten. Parry also thinks that he is on a quest for the holy grail. Jack is determined to help Parry because he feels that in doing so he can help himself. This is an excellent movie. It is funny, sad, and filled with hope.Read full review
This is one of Hollywood's best movies of the '90s and, I believe Robin Williams best to date. Jeff Bridges shows yet further range in his enormous talent, Amanda Plummer is a joy to watch, Michael Jeter's performance sadly reminds us that he left us too soon and, Mercedes Ruehl has us rooting and cheering triumphantly for love. Although funny, this movie was wrongly marketed as a comedy. It is a cinematic fantasy for sure of modern urban life, love and, pain. But, part fantasy, part comedy, mostly drama, it is a love story at its core. It is truly a masterpiece of story and story-telling via cinema. It deserves an audio updating to at least 5.1 surround.
I have to admit, I was not a Robin Williams fan; too much frantic energy for my taste. So I was actually surprised when I realized that I like this movie so much. I've probably seen it 7-8 times in the last few years. Here, Robin was, for him, somewhat restained. Both he and Jeff Bridges (who I always liked) play two downtrodden characters, both of whom have been nearly destroyed by the tragic events in their lives. Fate brings them together and one helps the other to find peace and redemption, and he is helped in return. The story tells me that redemption is still possible if one wants it badly enough, and it's never too late to know true joy. Mercedes Ruehl and Amanda Plummer are exceptional in their roles as girlfriends of the two characters. Mercedes even won an Oscar for her role. And Amanda shows us how we should all keep trying to eat dim sum and be strong enough to love someone, even when the going is not easy. And the late Michael Jeter is great as the voice of responsibility for the Jeff Bridges character. This movie will make you laugh and cry. When it's over you'll believe that you too can find redemption in your own life and you'll believe that there is always hope, no matter how much pain you've felt. It's one of my top ten favorites. (It's really saying something for me to say I've seen a movie with Robin in it more than once!)Read full review
I had seen this when it first came out and knew it was serious and different than other Robin Williams movies but couldn't remember details. I found it worth seeing again but probably won't watch it again for a long while. It needed more editing but was a profound story and fine acting.
