About this product

Product Information

In a heartrending and astonishing novel, Eggers illuminates the history of the civil war in Sudan through the eyes of Valentino Achak Deng, a refugee now living in the United States. We follow his life as he's driven from his home as a boy and walks, with thousands of orphans, to Ethiopia, where he finds safety — for a time. Valentino's travels, truly Biblical in scope, bring him in contact with government soldiers, janjaweed-like militias, liberation rebels, hyenas and lions, disease and starvation — and a string of unexpected romances. Ultimately, Valentino finds safety in Kenya and, just after the millennium, is finally resettled in the United States, from where this novel is narrated. In this book, written with expansive humanity and surprising humor, we come to understand the nature of the conflicts in Sudan, the refugee experience in America, the dreams of the Dinka people, and the challenge one indomitable man faces in a world collapsing around him.

AOK. Item as described, reasonable condition (as described), excellent price, reasonable packing and shipping time, no problems. Thanks. (Sorry, I don't do star ratings when some are automatic, as it's unfair to buyers to have eBay pre-empt any of the scores. You should complain to eBay, as your star ratings would have been very high.) I can't rate the product until I read it. It's unfair for eBay to require a product rating in order to send feedback! The guys at eBay are heavily into control.

  • Valentino's Story of Survival and Coming to the USA

I made my husband, a non-reader, read this book. I could not put it down. After watching, "The Lost Boys of Sudan," I wanted to read more about Sudan. What this book did for me was made me feel personally connected to Valentino's experiences. It was very raw and human, written in a way that touches you. I thought of Valentino as if I knew him. I looked at everything so differently. It also helped me reflect on seeing a boy, Henry, coming to America from Liberia. He literally freaked when he tasted cold water. He absolutely hated ice cream. He marveled at escalators, and commented on how lazy the white people were to have magic stairs. He thought America was so rich to have food coming out of drive up windows, cooked for you. All that came flooding back as I read about Valentino's lack of ...

  • Must Read!

I have not been able to tear myself away from this book. It involves your heart into the life of Vladamir Deng. There are some cuss words in the first chapter, while he is robbed, that you may chose to ignore. It is truely worth overlooking them. The story is intertwined between present day and his days in Sudan. His details regarding his life in Sudan are incredible. We can not know of this type of tragedy in our country. This book has a healthy world view that we Americans need to hear. This book should be a required book high school deniors or college students!

  • what is the what

This is one of the most though-provoking books I've read. We can be thankful we were born in America. Imagine living in Sudan, fearing for your life each day, not having enough food to eat or a place to sleep. This was real life for a young boy from Marial Bai.

  • Required for school summer reading.

This book is required by my daughter's school for summer reading. The subject matter is not really of interest to highschool girls. I am glad I did not pay much for the book because by the end of the class it will be highlighted and marked up.
