Nostalgia at its best. First episode has a 60 vette and following ones feature a 61 and newer with the different rear body. Cute stories though.

Route 66 : When men were men.
Route 66 is a perfect example of the state of TV show development after the demise of live anthology drama; the filmed situation drama. This was another great series from Sterling Silliphant, who also gave us NAKED CITY. The premise is that of two friends (Martin Milner as Tod Stiles and George Maharis as Buz Murdoch)leave a life working on a tug boat in New York harbor after Tod's father's death, leaving him with a little money and a great car- a 1960 Corvette! They take it down US interstate highway Route 66, which in those days went from New York to California. The stories revolve around the people they meet, and the problems encountered as they try their hands at different he-man type blue collar jobs. Watching them a half century later, we see how different the world was. Though Tod ... Though Tod and Buz are young men in their twenties, (Though both are actually about 30) they act in a far more adult manner than one would today. They live in a world with smoking, drinking, slow dances, and are able to quote from classic literature. They're responsible and wise, with big words and thoughtful philosophy offered as easy as a next breath. The world they are in is sometimes hardscrabble or menacing, but the two are supposedly averege all-American men, and up to any challenge. The jobs they take are things like mining, lumberjacking and oil drilling. In 1960, these are seen as the backbone of America, proudly filmed on actual locations, as the engines of power, prosperity, progress and a bright future. Today TV heroes wouldn't be anywhere near such places, unless to participate in some enviro-protest against them. As a boy, I saw a lot of characters like Tod and Buz as role models. Now I see them as a refreshing contrast to the foul mouthed,whiny,ever-P.C. minded oafs that pose as grown up role models today. I would have liked it if all the original ads were left in- But I guess that somebody was too P.C.-scared to acknowledge the long gone cigarette sponsor. What's more harmless than an ancient TV commercial? Oh well- I still recomend the series. Most episodes are quite enjoyable to a mature taste.

This show is from a time when I feel TV was at it's best for more realistic storylines in scripts as well as much better dramactic acting. When TV survived more on character development, story content, & not on mere special effects. Martin Milner & George Maharis were well put together for this show as they travel town to town along Route 66 getting into situations that you don't always expect them to get into. Great guest-stars of the time are throughout this series. High rating for the pilot episode "Black November" -great story, well acted, with guest star George Kennedy for one. Some episodes will not have the same impact as another, but on a whole very good stories. This is a 4-disc DVD Black & White Set. Well-packaged, 2-discs each packed together on 2 sides. I have only watched half the episodes so far in the set. What I dislike: Only 15 episodes, half of the first season. I've noticed this is starting to be a trend with many shows coming out on DVD, especially for shows that run 4 or 5 seasons. I prefer to purchase full season sets-or at least give us an option: Release both volumes of a season simultaneously separately and also box the same set as a single season purchase at the same time-give the consumer the option rather than wait months for the next volume to be released. Vol.2 of this series gets released next week. This volume was available last year. Overall rating for Route 66 the TV Series- Good.I'am looking forward to more. 2-2-08

A Journey in More Ways Than One
I purchased this item to give as a gift to a 19-year-old woman who just happens to be a 60s aficionado. She is fascinated by anything that offers a glimpse at the American lifestyle during those years, and this DVD set has really made her happy. Even though Route 66 purports to be an adventure series--and it is one at face value--the show's journey also serves to present psychological studies of a variety of offbeat and intriguing characters whom Buzz and Todd encounter along the way in their travels. Since the series was shot on location, it's very interesting to see a wide variety of American regions as they appeared in the early 1960s. The original commercials are included, and that has proven to be another area of interest to the young woman who received this item as a gift. To an ... Many who went on to become huge stars--such as Robert Redford, James Caan, Martin Sheen, and Robert Duvall--appeared at some point in Route 66. Personally, I think watching something like this is a refreshing change from The Biggest Loser, The Simple Life, and all the other tripe that populates today's airwaves. Just looking at the Corvette and listening to the Nelson Riddle theme song alone would be worth the price of admission.

Route 66 - Season 1, Vols 1 & 2
Route 66 was one of my husband's favorite TV shows of the 60's, so I searched Ebay for it on DVD and found quite a few people selling copies of the complete first season. We purchased our copy, which comes in a set of volume 1 and 2, with 4 DVD's each and we have been very pleased. It was produced from the original 35mm prints, so the picture and sound are perfect - and no commercials!! :) The DVD's include menu selections and cast bios for each episode, plus the option of "playing all" so that you can just sit and enjoy one after the other without stopping each time to select the next episode. There are 30 episodes in chronological order, classic original tv commercials, as well as filmographies of stars and special guests. The outer case looks great with several good screen shots ...
