A handy product for Skiers, hikers. etc.

This is the second time I've ordered these. The first one I used for 6 rough years, this past year the thermometer dried out so I've ordered more for myself an family. I wouldn't use the compass for exact long range navigation but its handy for keeping to a heading and a good backup along with a map for keeping to a heading. All told, a good idea.

  • Top critical review

Built to be sold, not used.

Good first impression. The compass and thermometer run true. But disappointment quickly follows. Flex it a bit in your hands and the back pops off. The compass & thermometer are glued to a piece of ordinary paper, but the plastic housing is not water tight! The back is just held in by friction & the compass protrudes through a whole in the front piece. Maybe this was meant to be solvent welded shut and they just skipped that step? If you buy it, plan to super glue the backs and around the compass to make something that will survive past your first day on the mountain. This was obviously meant for skiers, but as it is I expect that after my first "yard sale" I'll just have an empty plastic rectangle dangling from my jacket...

  • A good value for what I paid.

Thermometer is accurate, it is built well enough but the compass is over sensitive needs a moment to settle down to read accurately. It would work better if in a liquid rather than air in the capsule.

  • Typical Coghlans

    - it feels like olde skool plastic car key FOB from the 1960s. It's OK for what I bought it for, but wouldn't want to depend on the compass for global nav.
