    Alice Faye is great!!!

If you're a fan of Fannie Brice, you'll love this! It is the closest you will get to seeing part of her life story told in a movie version. It was close enough for her to win a lawsuit which is discussed in the "special features" part of the dvd. It was far more accurate than "Funny Girl". Alice Faye and Tyrone Power are excellent, engaging and talented actors. The cinematography was beautifully done for it's age. Al Jolsen sang "Mammy" & other songs, & I felt sad when he had the painted black face & white lips, as this was popular entertainment for it's time to capitalize on the black entertainer's look & songs. In spite of my feelings about that part of the movie, it was well done and reflected history for that era. The movie was really fun and entertaining & I did love it. A ...

  • Very appropriate title for this movie

I wanted "Rose of Washington Square" because first, it is a musical and being a big fan of Al Jolson for many years, had to have it. This is to take nothing away from Alice Faye with her golden voice and talent as an actress and performer. The movie of course has strong overtones relating to Fanny Brice and her career and life however, the way the script was written, the choice of actors like Tyrone Power, Alice Faye and Al Jolson in my view make this movie a stand out of excellent entertainment and bring back many memories of what musicals once were like. For myself at least I rate it "tops" like "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Singing In The Rain" and for those who had never heard of or seen Al Jolson perform, this is a real treat. He was billed for years as the "Worlds Greatest Entertainer" ...

  • Rose of Washington review

So many great songs came from this movie, such as "My Man." Al Jolson sang well, as always. It is the first movie I've seen where Tyrone Power was somewhat of a jerk. He did it well though. A girl trying to make a living with her voice gets discouraged and takes a small trip. While on the trip she meets a smooth guy and falls in love with him. He is shifty and not the settling down type. He leaves during the night and failes to meet her for their breakfast date. He can't handle money, so he handles other peoples. She never stops believing that he is a great guy. There is a surprize ending.

  • The theme of the film

Another of the very enjoyable musical films featuring Alice Fay - a lovely woman with a superb voice.
