The Junior's story began in the 1920s when Harry Rosen opened the Enduro Sandwich shop at the corner of DeKalb and Flatbush Avenue. Since that time, Brooklyn, the Rosen family, and the restaurant have all evolved ... and oh, what a story it is! "Welcome to Junior's" is the perfect combination of history and cooking. As the years unfold, the descriptive writing lets you explore the streets and culture of Brooklyn through the decades, always returning to the corner where the Enduro first stood. That same writing style lets you sit at the counter of Junior's and peruse the orange and white striped menu. Will it be breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? Dessert? All the bases are covered here, with straightforward recipes and tips that will give your efforts that special Junior's touch. My favorites include the Challah French toast (coated with cornflake crumbs), the potato pancakes (try them stuffed with brisket in the "Something Different" sandwich), and the famous cheesecake (made with a unique spongecake crust that won't get hard or soggy like graham cracker ones do). Yummy! You can go from fancy (broiled flounder with crabmeat) to simple (I live in Texas think Junior's chili is divine!). There are also great versions of classics such as shrimp salad, spaghetti and meatballs, and clam chowder. Junior's is also a world class bakery, with a variety of breads and pastries .. it even takes simple pound cake to new heights! I've owned this cookbook since it was first published, and turn to it again and again. Recipes are simple and use readily available ingredients, but the techniques really make a difference and the descriptions will transport you to Brooklyn every time. I dare you to read this book and try to resist the temptation to rush into to the kitchen and start cooking! Enjoy!Read full review
This is THE must-have cookbook! Have owned many cookbooks over the years, but this is the one I will keep. We live in the middle of nowhere. On a trip, stopped at a Junior's restaurant. My husband LOVED the French toast. I spent 6 months trying to replicate it, but something was missing... I finally found this book, confirmed that the recipe was in it, and made my eBay purchase. The French toast recipe alone made this worth the price of admission! If you have memories of Junior's restaurant, the recipes truly bring the food into your home. There are photographs and text telling you all about the restaurant. It is a wonderful book, filled with terrific memories AND recipes that work.
Amazing and brand new book!
