Synopsis
Crucial to the development of a protostar and active for most of the pre-main sequence phase, the mass out'ow phenomenon is the most spectacular ma- festation of star formation. The generation of jets from young stars involves a complex interplay, still poorly understood, between gravity, turbulence, and magnetic forces that may have important implications on the removal of - cess angular momentum from the star-disk system as well as on conditions for planet formation. These jets also create shocks and ionization fronts that propagate into the surrounding medium, thereby providing feedback that can a'ect both the cloud structure and chemistry, how the cloud evolves, and hence the future generation of young stars. An ultimate understanding of jets from young stars, their generation, and interaction with their parent cloud is a vital part of any uni'ed theory of Star Formation. The motivation of the four-year JETSET (Jet Simulations Experiments and Theory) Marie Curie Research Training Network is to build an interd- ciplinary European research and training community focused on the study of jets fromyoungstars,at the con'uence ofastrophysicalobservations,theor- ical and computational modelling, laboratory experiments and Grid techn- ogy. The network scienti'c goals will focus on understanding (i) the driving mechanisms of jets around young stars; (ii) the cooling-heating processes, - stabilities and shock structures in stellar and laboratory jets; and (iii) the impact of jets on energy balance and star formation in the galactic medium., This volume provides an introduction to the astrophysics of jets from young stars. The first half is devoted to general observational constraints, covering the outflow phenomenon in young stars, the identification of magneto-centrifugal processes as the main jet driving mechanism and the magnetic interaction between star and its accretion disc. The second half is devoted to theoretical knowledge of magneto-hydrodynamic processes pertinent to the jet launching mechanism in young stars. This comprises a general introduction to magneto-hydrodynamics, a description of the role of MHD processes in Standard Accretion Discs and the physics of steady state MHD outflows, from the basic concepts and equations to modern self-similar solutions. Further coverage details the various classes of steady magnetic wind models currently discussed in the context of protostellar jets., This volume presents the edited lecture notes of the First JETSET School on Jets from Young Stars: Models and Constraints, held by the Marie Curie Research and Training Network on JET Simulations, Experiments and Theory. The first half of the book is devoted to general observational constraints. The second section is devoted to theoretical knowledge of magneto-hydrodynamic processes pertinent to the jet launching mechanism in young stars.
