About this product

Product Information

Adapted from Isak Dinesen's novel, OUT OF AFRICA, this film plaintively tells the story of two troubled adults who meet and fall in love in the African wilderness. Karen Blixen-Flecke (Meryl Streep) is a modern woman, caught in the shortcomings of a practical marriage. Finch Hatton (Robert Redford) is a gallant British hunter, lonely, but unable to commit. As they two meet and begin a torrid affair, they set out on an epic adventure in the badlands of Africa--an adventure that real-life Karen Blixen-Flecke would later novelize under the pen name Isak Dinesen.Sydney Pollack's opus, OUT OF AFRICA, is a full, visually compelling film. Its storyline evokes a plethora of emotions, ranging from fear and loathing to hope and the elation of love. Robert Redford and Meryl Streep are electric as the two damaged infidels in love. A key American film, OUT OF AFRICA is not to be missed.

  • OUT OF AFRICA (1993, VHS)

I copied this movie off cable when it was first shown and when it wore out I bought this. To begin with I love the period, the genre but mostly the fast-vanishing character Meryl Streep so aptly portrays. The compassionate courage displayed in whipping down a lion, a beast the character feared in the extreme in ealier scenes; the heightened sense of true inner morality in the midst of her very human life struggles; the love, sense of responsibility and humility depicted by the kneeling in front of authorities for the sake of the people who have served her and whom she as good as adopted to care for. The resiliency in the face of gross betrayal by a husband whom she was beginning to love, in the loss of her coffee plantation. The resciprocated love and devotion of her servants and the ...

  • The Last Classic

This movie is the last of the classics. It's a portal to the colonial era through the the eyes of a Dutch Princess played by Meryl Streep who gets so bored with life that she marries a man she hates and gets thrill by cultivating and in Africa. Finally, she finds her true love in the wilderness of Africa where her soul becomes free under the companionship of a vagabond safari played by Robert Redford. A good VHS to keep the memories of the classic era of family movies.
