I've yet to test it with film but the camera itself functions wonderfully (however im not too sure as i'm barely dipping my toes into SLR photography). The condition of the camera is also fantastic, with a bit of dirt here and there that'll hopefully come off once I clean it. The bag and filter lenses that came with the camera are also in great shape. Once I've tested it with film I'll hopefully update this review (if its possible to do so).

When new these cameras were unreliable unless they had the factory motor upgrade to a metal drive gear. Buy with extreme caution and then only after running the camera (without film) for at least 100 actions to check the transport, mirror and shutter reliability. Anyone selling one of these and quoting "untested - no film" or similar knows there is a fault! Cons: not many, light and fast (when working)lenses are not the best but good for happy snapping - Not one of Pentax's best efforts - this goes for all MZ ans SF series sadly

I bought the camera for my daughter who is 14 and wants to learn about photography,so rather than buy a digital point and shoot camera I bought this film camera from a charity site, she has played with it quite a bit after reading the manual and has been surprised with results so far as she does not know how the pictures come out until the films are developed.I know nothing about photography but bought this after reading reviews on it.
Good until it breaks down, not really reliable

Well, good camera beneath a not so good looking silver plastic casing. Please folow the link http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-autofocus-film-slr-camera-reviews/61278-pentax-mz-50-zx-50-a.html for much more details. I agree that for the price you can get it, is a really amazing machine.
MZ-50 is a 2nd generation 35mm film SLR. An easy to use camera that does not baffle you with main menu and sub menu complexity. As with all 2nd generation SLRs the MZ-50 is not as robust as older SLRs but is well made nonetheless. Aperure, shutter, manual and scene modes are all easy to use and produce excellent results. A nice feature is manual and DX input for ISO settings, this allows more flexibility if using older or non DX coded films. The Pentax AF lens system is very responsive and autofocus is quick; clarity is excellent and with UV or skylight filter attached is even better, as well as adding protection to lens surface. Overall a very good film SLR if the price is right.
A lovely little camera that can easily be bought on Ebay as a bargain. Very light but better made than it might feel to some. Even though its a little smaller than im used to its still very comfy to use. Once you sit down with the manual for a few minutes its very easy to just pic up and take photos , even after never using 1 with so many different modes before. But you can still go back to manual if you prefer to be more in control of what you take. Its a must to have 1 or 2 AF lenses though, just to take advantage of the automatic focusing, which is what this camera ia mainly made for, as most of the newer models are. But even with "A" lenses it still provides Aperature Priority, where you set the aperature and the camera sets the speed for you.I'm Still getting used to it but From what I've found so far I think you have to have a lens with at least an "A" setting even if you wish to use in manual mode. When I've tried lenses without "A" it wouldnt let me do anything. If you are taking photos quite close to your subject there is the pop-up flash that saves you having to fit one to the hot shoe, but you will still need another for those times when you need more light if your subject is further away or if theres not enough light for the pop-up. A good addition to my camera collection at a bargain price.Read full review
It is a good camera, Excellent Manual 35mm SLR camera with the added convenience of Automatic Scene Programs. Incredibly useable in fully manual mode with great ergonomics. One handed selection of Aperture and Shutter controls and 2 frames per second for sports photography. Takes a superb photo and an absolute gem in the classic Pentax range.
