    Great Filmmaking Techniques, Imagery and Hisory Book

    This book does have camera set up diagrams and illustrations, which attempts to backward engineer the cinematography of the Masters. this is very valuable knowledge. It has black & white pictures and detailed text about motion films and their creators, not that much color pictures if any. It is very good at discussing the aesthetics styles, motivation, concept and inspiration of past Directors of Photography and Directors. This is a great review of Film-making history and Learning about the Cinematographers of the Past. There is very little information about more modern films. Seems to cover films all the way up to when color films completely took over. (like between 1920s thru 1970s) It taught me solid practical skills, which are needed for indie filmmakers like me.     The best exposition of grammar of film

    The Five C's of Cinematography by Joseph V. Mascelli (1998)is the best condensation of the grammar of film. It is perhaps the most comprehensive and complete statement of the language of film. For an exposistion of key principles of the film narrative it is hard to beat.This should be a handbook for every student of film craft.
