  • Plastic: will it last?

I ordered the ES-2, and then waited seven months for one to arrive in stock. Does it do the job of copying negatives? Yes. I have digitized over 500 negatives so far, using the Nikon D850 with the 60mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens. It is pretty easy to use the device. The negatives are held flat, and using the tap-focus-shoot with the D850 touch screen gives excellent sharpness at f/8. But I have thousands of negatives to run through the unit. Will the plastic construction of the ES-2 last? I hope so.

It works and I've put lots of film through it, but for the price, it would have been good to have metal threads at least. Use it with the Nikon 60mm micro. I have a 55 and was not able to adjust focus well enough to use it. I tried it initially on its side and got very unsharp results. Then I attached the camera to a copy stand and I was able to focus more reliably. Be careful what kind of light source you use below or you can get flickering or off color. I had to test for the right exposure. What looks good to your eye or the camera might not be the best exposure when you open that image in PS and need to reverse the tones for a positive print (cmd/i on ...

  • Too expensive for bits of plastic but it works its purpose

Flimsy pieces of plastic for $200. But if you need it basically the choice is either buy it or some DIY.
