The graphics may be slightly outdated, but the game holds up overall. The first game sets the stage for this Legacy of Kain offshoot. The Soul Reaver Games really do stand on their own. I would recommend ditching the analogs and playing with the D-Pad for combat if you can help it though. It's far less choppy. The characters, background, & history create a story-line that is both believable and entertaining. For those who don't appreciate hours of puzzles and logic games along with their gratuitous violence, it may not be the right series. I absolutely love these games, and the follow ups are just as good if not better.

This review is for the optional game tip book, not for the video game itself. Sorry I got it mixed up! The game tip book is fragile, as the pages aren't securely glued (this is a serious manufacturer's flaw, as I have seen it before from this particular company), so you end up taping the whole damn book together again eventually. Also, this is nothing but a text walkthrough of the game. Maps would have been nice so as to help navigation. If you lose your place in the book, or even worse if you miss something, you have to try and hunt it down, which isn't easy. Again, a map with item location indicators and what you need to get those items would have been REALLY helpful. Finally, at least a quick review of tactics vs common enemies would have been nice, since what's currently present isn't detailed. This book DOES grant a detailed walkthrough, but it's difficult to use if you make a mistake. Most people would ask "Where do I find X item" and be totally out of luck if they hadn't already been following the book's prescribed route. Thus you end up going from location to location, checking to see if you got the item it mentions already.Read full review
This is one of my many favorite games! It has a great story line. It is in the Legacy Of Kain Series of games. However I have never played Blood Omen which is supposed to be the first game in the series then Soul Reaver. I played this one first and feel that you do not have to play Blood Omen to follow the Story. This game takes a different path that blood omen does since the blood omen series gives you more of the story through Kain. I much prefer Raziel as the main character. I will say this much once you play through this soul reaver you will be itching the play the second one. The characters voices are quite poetic the way they talk and the story it basically about seeking vengeance and power. You will find the fighting sequences are a little different than what you would be normally used to. Since the game involves the killing of vampires in order to kill them you have to acquire their souls which is also your health. If you do not the beasts can come back to life. It has some very unique ways to destroy these demonic vampires using fire, water, spears and spike hanging in different rooms and light. To progress through the game it has some puzzle solving to get past different obstacles. You may have to change between the spectral and material realms to solve them. You must get this game and play for yourself it is hours of fun.Read full review
Few games in history have had a story as compelling as this one. In legacy of kain: Soul reaver, you play as Raziel, a vampire lieutenant who has had his wings broken and cast into oblivion by the mighty vampire lord Kain. Raziel's body is broken, but he is brought back to life by The Elder God to kill Kain and his treacherous brethern. The real novelty of this game is that you cannot really die... not really anyways. When you are "Killed" you merely materialize in what is known as the spectral realm, and you have to feed on souls so you can rematerialize in the material world. This dynamic allows for a great variety of gameplay elements and puzzles that will really strain your brain. All the great voice acting, the spooky environments and immense boss battles all serves to give the player a genuine feeling of being in such a genuinely gothic setting. This is not a game for kids though. It's not overly violent, but it is pretty dark, scary, intense and bloody at times, especially in the boss battles. Soul Reaver for those of you who have not played through it before may take anywhere from 10-20 hours to finish. Soul reaver is a game you'll find yourself coming back to though. It looks even better on the Dreamcast.Read full review
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for the Playstation One (PS1) was one of the First games I played on the Console. It has a Excellent Storyline, and gameplay is smooth, so it's easy to pick up, and very hard to put down. One of the main reasons I purchased it on Ebay was because the copy I brought was in EXCELLENT condition: The jewel case was intact, The Game Manual was included, and the game Disc did not have a single scratch on it. It is VERY RARE to find a used PS1 Game in this kind of condition. The bottom line is this: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is the best game of the Legacy of Kain Series. If you can find a Working copy of this game, be sure to buy it right away. Thank you for reading my review.
This game in my opinion is a must have for any game collector or old school gamer. The game holds up surprisingly well graphically and gameplay wise. I love it!

Razeil, that is my name. I was a Lueitenant to Kain, but oversteped my bonderies by evolving before him. When he saw my wings he tore them and cast me into the abyss. I should have died, but i was brought back, like Kain before me. Now an entirly differant creature, i will exact my Revange. This is awsome, great game, wonderful story with great looking graphics. I bought it long time ago and never let go, till it was stolen. If you like challenging puzzles and thriller/who dunnit movies this is it. The storyline alone makes you want to play it more. Also it constantly spins wich gives you no load time after it starts.
1st off let me say I myself would not recommend this game for a child under 16 years of age, but that's just me. My main purpose in buying it was it was my 32 year old son's birthday and he and myself love playing these types of games. This one lives up to our standards it's loaded with plenty of action and of course blood and gore. There's also plenty of puzzles to solve and a heck of a challenge. It takes you between two different planes which you have to use back and forth to advance ahead in each level. The main person in this was backstabed by "Kain" which is the leader of the vampire army, and thrown into "The Lake Of The Damned" which to a vampire is like "Acid" to them. As he recovers it become apparent to him that he's been stripped of his flesh and now starts his long journey for revenge against "Kain". We've not yet completed the game, but we don't want to turn it off either. If it wasn't for our wives we probably wouldn't. I can't wait to see how it'll end. I would recommend it for mature players. It's a thrill ride!!!!! Peace. bigdad417 (Raymond Barnett SR.)Read full review
In this highly anticipated sequel to Blood Omen you play the part of Raziel, first-born of Kain's Lieutenants in Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain. Many centuries have passed since the events of Blood Omen and Kain having made the decision to damn the Pillars of Nosgoth to decay has built his throne at the base of the corrupted pillars. At some point, Kain raised six Lieutenants that he snared from the Underworld and breathed his vampiric gift in to. Among these souls was Raziel. A millenium later after faithfully serving his master and maker Kain, Raziel is endowed with a new gift, one that surpasses even Kain. Raziel stretches out his newly grown wings in front of Kain's audience as Kain looks on in disgust and awe. Kain in a moment of jealous rage rips the wings off of Raziel's back and leaves him incapacitated. At Kain's order, Raziel is then thrown in to the Lake of The Dead by his own brothers who do not dare question Kain's command. Raziel's body is ripped apart by the searing flames of The Abyss as he continues his descent for what seems like an eternity. Awakened in a different realm of existence and with his physical form almost completely destroyed, Raziel is greeted by a force who refers to himself as The Elder God. He offers you a chance at redemption and revenge against your former brethren. From the Underworld you rise to reap the souls of your vampire brothers and to face off against your master Kain. By destroying your brothers who have devolved over time you will gain different vampiric abilities which will help you progress through the ruined world of Nosgoth. The hunt for Kain begins... I give this game an excellent rating overall. This was my favorite installment in The Legacy of Kain series. One of the most twisted stories I have ever experienced followed by amazing voice acting and a really dark soundtrack makes Soul Reaver a must-have!Read full review
