A Killer Reissue of One of Rock 'n' Roll's Earliest Long-Players
In its original 12-inch vinyl version, this long-player was one of maybe THREE rock 'n' roll albums that existed in 1956 (and the other two were by Elvis). In other words, this was one of three platters of a dozen rock 'n' roll songs in the whole world -- the only way to listen to the new music without getting up to change a 45 rpm platter or let another drop on an automatic changer every 6 or 7 minutes. So there wasn't a lot of competition, and -- like Elvis's first two long-players -- it's still a great record. Actually, the album is an expansion/reconfiguration of a previously issued 10-inch platter called "Shake, Rattle & Roll" that was issued the previous year, but the four added songs are hardly "filler" by any means. This is a thoroughly rocking, totally beguiling collection of solid dance/r&b-style numbers, exuding not only great playing by the band but Haley's personality at its most engaging. Expanded to 15 songs with the addition of three solid numbers from slightly later in Haley's Decca Records period, the Geffen-imprint's reissue uses the state-of-the-art masters, and this a superb, audiophile-quality blast from rock 'n' roll's distant past. Dig it!
