I had been curious about Karajan's version of Mahler's Fifth for a long time, but never got around to listening to it until now. It turns out to be a very impressive performance. This is a long and complicated work of music, but Karajan has a thorough command of it. Nothing escapes his attention. Under his direction, the Berliners play with amazing precision to bring out seemingly every detail of the score. But it isn't just a dry performance - the orchestra plays with gusto, too. That said, it's fair to say it's less "heated" than Bernstein's version with the Vienna Philharmonic, which is an emotional roller coaster ride. Karajan presents more of a smooth train ride, with controlled turbulence. Bernstein's Vienna recording remains my favorite Mahler Fifth for its emotive power, but Karajan's is a refreshing change of pace. It has plenty of bite and its own kind of power. If you like this symphony, then you should find a lot to enjoy about Karajan's take on it.
