  • Perfect little street shooter, old-school

I heard about this little camera from a street photography YouTuber who happened to mention it was his go-to film camera for street photography (alongside his Fuji digital gear), so I looked it up. It took me a while to find one in the condition I wanted, and this one is near mint... amazing considering it was manufactured circa 1970. This is not a rangefinder; rather it uses zone focusing, which gives you a bit less confidence about your shot being in focus, but also lets you be "in the zone" (pun intended) rather than constantly trying to nail focus. The fact is, it works great. This camera uses an ingenious electromechanical autoexposure system that requires no batteries: light gathers on a selenium cell that mechanically controls aperture and shutter speed, or sends up a red flag in the viewfinder if there isn't enough light. After all these years, this worked flawlessly in this particular camera. But this also means you don't have a lot of control over the exposure triangle -- this is a snapshooter, albeit a high quality one. It can only switch between 2 shutter speeds, 1/200 and 1/40 (you can hear the difference), and it will always stop down to the correct exposure even if you manually set the aperture to f/2.8. The manual settings are ostensibly only for use with flash, but you can use it to override the underexposure failsafe to do some night photography. You can of course also push the film by choosing a higher ASA than the film is rated at. All told this is a perfect camera for the street photographer who wants to go old-school and enjoy a shooting experience unencumbered by menu settings and chimping. Try Kodak Portra 400 (color) and Ilford HP5 (b&w) for some beautiful and forgiving film.

  • ideal analog camera for travel

I got this camera after having 4 35mm cameras fail during a recent trip. I read a bit about reliable mechanical analog cameras that were lightweight for travel. The Olympus Trip 35 came up as #1. It has an easy zone focusing system, a lovely clear lens, it's essentially a point and shoot from the old school. I'll be buying a couple more to have in reserve.

  • A nostalgic camera

The camera comes with original case and functions well. Its decent outlook has been well kept for many years. Shooting photos with this compact camera is a relaxing joy as it slows down my space for photography but also recalls ample memories of my good old days in the film era. I love it !
