About this product

Product Information

Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgement Day and the battlefield of today's clash of civilisations. From King David to Barack Obama, from the birth of Judaism, Christianity and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict, this is the epic history of 3,000 years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism and coexistence. How did this small, remote town become the Holy City, the 'centre of the world' and now the key to peace in the Middle East? In a gripping narrative, Simon Sebag Montefiore reveals this ever-changing city in its many incarnations, bringing every epoch and character blazingly to life. Jerusalem's biography is told through the wars, love affairs and revelations of the men and women - kings, empresses, prophets, poets, saints, conquerors and whores - who created, destroyed, chronicled and believed in Jerusalem. As well as the many ordinary Jerusalemites who have left their mark on the city, its cast varies from Solomon, Saladin and Suleiman the Magnificent to Cleopatra, Caligula and Churchill; from Abraham to Jesus and Muhammad; from the ancient world of Jezebel, Nebuchadnezzar, Herod and Nero to the modern times of the Kaiser, Disraeli, Mark Twain, Rasputin and Lawrence of Arabia. Drawing on new archives, current scholarship, his own family papers and a lifetime's study, Montefiore illuminates the essence of sanctity and mysticism, identity and empire in a unique story of the city that many believe will be the setting for the Apocalypse. This is how Jerusalem became Jerusalem: the only city that exists twice - in heaven and on earth.

I've bought hundreds of books from goldstonebooksuk in just the last few weeks alone, because of the amazing discounts on the books for multiple-book purchases (the more books you buy, the higher the discount, all the way up to 50%!). The books have always lived up to the description, or better than described. All well-packed, with super-quick delivery. Exceptional support whenever I've contacted them. Awesome seller.

Book was delivered - it took a bit longer than what was shown on the listing, but it was okay for international delivery (3 weeks). Condition of book was very good but there was a large fold in the cover. Note that the book was sent in a plastic bag so the corners got a bit rounded on its travels. That said, the rest of the book was in good condition. Overall cost of book and delivery was very good. Sellers communication also on point. Thank you.

  • World enlightenment

The book explains not only the basis of religions but also the troubled Middle East before and after Christ ie BC to AD using Christ's timeline as nomenclature in explaining the circumstances and dating of events; not excluding other faiths, religions or beliefs. An excellent insight into the troubles and tribulations of mankind and the world then and now, from which a troubling parallel is drawn. A book I recommend that everybody should read in terms of understanding repression, oppression defeat and victory and the costs and implications to life, people, cultures and dignity all driven by leaders who are power hungry. Read and digest then draw your own conclusions.

Magnificent work on the subject matter, highly recommended. Item received has been obviously read through, but in no way distracted from an excellent read.

  • Fascinating, riveting, big and bold.

Although I am only part of the way into this mammoth book, it is clearly a definitive history of the great city of Jerusalem. Well researched and beautifully written. Also, I bought this used edition in very good shape for £5.00. The new updated hardback copy is currently selling on Amazon for £95.00!

  • Great Read on an Important Topic

Fantastic book on an important topic. It is a tour de force of good writing. It treats of a topic of great importance, namely, the status of the city of Jerusalem for the world, against the back of the city's turbulent and painful history. Even at the present time. A city to unite us rather than divide us.
