Superb literary translation of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible
Firstly, let me say that this translation is not for everyone. It is not for the casual layperson or someone looking for a contemporary religious commentary. Robert Alter has given us a LITERARY translation of the first five books of the bible into readable English while trying to preserve the beauty of the original prose, such as the alliterations, word repetitions, and rhythms. This is NOT a purely literal translation, for that, I recommend Everett Fox's translation which is valuable in its own right, though not as readable. For example in Genesis 1:5, Alter states that the Hebrew uses a cardinal ("one"), not ordinal ("first") number, yet he translates it as "first day" rather than the more literal "day one" because it sounds more literary (flows better). Also, I should point out that that where the Hebrew name for God appears in the form YHWH, Alter uses the traditional "Lord" because it sounds better (the exact pronunciation of "YHWH" is unknown by definition though some translators will use Yahweh or Jehovah). Robert Alter has also provided a goldmine of introductory material and commentary which takes up about as much space as the actual translation (about 1000 pages total). This commentary is mainly text oriented so don't expect anything like what you find in most contemporary commentaries (exactly what I was looking for!). Finally, be aware that Robert Alter, being a learned professor, uses high level vocabulary - in Genesis 1, for example, I had to look up the meanings of "nonce" and "parturition" in the commentary. However, his writing style is very readable for a technical book. In summary, this translation is highly recommended for someone looking for a translation that reads like the classic literary work it is, while preserving as much of the original text as possible (I liked that the biblical chapters are laid out just like in a book, beginning on a new page).
