Synopsis
The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair Peoplethe goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen landsfled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels in 1982 dollars, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full-color paintings and verses of THE SECRET. Are you smart enough? THE SECRET: A TREASURE HUNT was published in 1982. The year before publication, the author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum., The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People--the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands--fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. And they remained hidden until now...Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many ""armchair treasure hunt"" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Good seller, shipped fast. Little problem with the box it was shipped in. It was packed with these books & 2 others & had come open in shipping. The Post Office put some heavy white tape to hold it together & there was small damage to some of the items, not anything to really complain about. I wanted all these items & I appreciate the discount that was given. Will buy from again & tell the Shipping Dept. to be careful about over-loading the box. Blessings.

The book is in mint condition. It was supposed to be used, but appears new. The subject is a compelling hunt for treasure boxes that were buried by the author. Exciting exploration to be headed into.

Questionable hunt for a supposed treasure.

A few years back I was watching a TV show that led me to this book. I found this book a mix of both imaginary beings and a treasure hunt. The poems as I see them aren't in order with the pictures, very hard to follow or even begin any hunt. A lifetime could be spent searching in Cities. And never be any closer than I. Nothing stays the same forever. Every thing changes with time. Most likely half of the treasures have been found ( but never recorded, due to person not knowing item was linked to a vast treasure) ,or have been moved by construction or natural disasters. This is the strength of a treasure and the unknown. If you're in a position that can fly to over 10,000 cities and search by using blurry pictures and poems, to hunt for Mr Priess treasures . Go ahead. But chances are ...

  • Fantasy is not reality

The premise of the book is very interesting and the idea of a treasure hunt is always fun and compelling. The fact that the author of the book died before alt the treasures were found is disheartening. None of the treasures have been found in 10+ years and there are arguments about real locations of remaining treasures, plus the locations have been changed in recent years...not worth the time any longer.

  • Hrrmph

The book is ok. It will Work for me but the pictures are not clear at all. Can barely make some of them out and since it is s book designed as a map to lead you to a treasure you would think the pictures would be more focused and printed better. I’m gonna use the book but will have to google the images to see them better. C

  • Not what I expected

I assumed this book had the poems across from the coordinating picture. It doesn't. How are we supposed to know which one goes with which?
