  • It's pretty ok

As far as the Cure is concerned, people often compare the dark early albums to the happier later albums. By 2000, The Cure had created blended albums with both textures. This album ends with a 10-minute expression of pain, betrayal, and misery. It's super fun. The opening track is also a gem for those who love Disintegration and Pornography. A few other tracks are sunnier, more akin to the tone (but not the style) of The Top or Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. My favorite track is probably "There Is No If..." because it feels the most like The Cure is breaking new ground on the album. Which brings me to my overarching comment: The album doesn't really break new ground for The Cure. Maybe there are more guitars, maybe more layers, maybe different words. But it's business as usual for The Cure, which would be exciting if this wasn't "as usual." But it's what we've seen before from the Cure, which is a bit disappointing. It's good, it's just not fresh. So the album is ok. Pretty ok. I'm glad I bought it.
