Several people here wrote reviews saying that you need to read the books to understand both of these films, but I had no problem at all.And I really loved both of them! Anton was a really endearing and unusual main character, who seems half drunk at times,(and IS,hehe). The entire premise of the film, and the settings were all just as unusual and refreshing to see.In saying that,I mean that you dont usually get a tun down, and in places a ruined,Russian city in movies these days, and that in itself was new,..not to mention all the incredible effects! Wow! Apparently,Night Watch is Russia's first big movie from what I have read about it.Here's what the Wiki on it said: " The film was the first big-budget Russian fantasy film and one of the first blockbusters made after the collapse of the Soviet film industry. The film was produced by Channel One, the government-owned TV channel, with a budget of US$4.2 million. ((Not a lot, considering the amounts that go into movies in the US today!)) Part of the challenge for such a big-budget fantasy film was creating hundreds of visual effects (VFX) shots to which a modern audience is accustomed. 16 Russian VFX studios and several freelancers were used, each chosen for their individual strengths. Many shots were created by different artists across different time zones, using the Internet to share data and images.[3]" Pretty impressing, isnt it? When it came on though,I wasnt aware of any of this,soo..I had to get over the fact that there were subtitles. Uggg!I usually turn away from most of those type of films.I just hate subtitles because they always take away from what I am watching. I hate having to rush read the words, and make sure I can still catch the scenes. It feels too much like work to me.HeHe.However,as it was on TV,I tookthe chance,as it was 3 am,and nothing else was on.I was really surprised at the use of those subtitles too. They werent like normal subs a lot of the times. They ran, like watercolors,or moved into a mist at times, etc, ..depending on what they were about. I saw this,Day Watch, first, and found myself forgetting that I was even reading subtitles after about 3 minutes. The acting was great, considering I knew none of the actors at all. Konstantin Khabensky does an amazing job as Anton, and the other actors are great as well!.Now,I have to have these in my DVD collection.I am waiting to see if they do the third film,Dusk Watch(originslly meant to be called 'Twilight Watch'.No connection to the Twilight movies either!) which is in limbo,as the rights were bought by Fox,for all three movies. I have heard that the third will be in English and set in America. If so,I cant wait to see it! Konsantin Khabensky had BETTER return as Anton,or it wont be any kind of a good movie at all.He is the centerpiece of the whole trilogy! Also,Geser,Zavulon, and Olga also need to be the same people.Yeah,..even Svetlana needs to return.Lol!I didnt really care for her character too much. She seemed a bit dumb and unaware(the actress did).I hate it when they mess up a good cast for new films!I give this and its brother film a 10 or an 11! ps,I DO have one tiny gripe about Night Watch-they dubbed the voices into English, and there was no option for the original language.French, and Italian,I think, and English, but no Russian.I missed hearing Anton's real voice. Its one of those you find yourself remembering.Read full review
First, I highly recommend a read-through of the books by the same titles, written by Russian writer Sergie Lukyanenko. He has envisioned a truly original supernatural reality which co-exists with the regular human one. Vampires, witches and wizards of varying degrees of power are divided into two camps: the "light" others and the "dark" others. Both sides are bound to a set of rules of conduct, and when these rules are broken, all hell breaks loose. The Day Watch watches the dark others while the Night Watch watches the light others. All of the action takes place in Moscow. In the books and movies, the characters tend to under-react to the horror they deal with in typical Muscovite fashion. This gives the characters a feel that is distinct from what we are used to. The first movie, "Day Watch," is terrific, although a little complex if you haven't read the book. A 2nd watching will help you understand what you missed the first time. The same main characters are back in "Night Watch." The 2nd movie is better than the first! Make is this far and you will fall in love with these bizarre movies. Hopefully, the last book in the trilogy, "Twilight Watch," will be out as a movie soon. Bottom line is that these movies are incredibly imaginative, the special effects are cutting-edge, and for anyone who is drawn toward the vampire genre they are required viewing. I personally love these movies.Read full review

These movies are Underworld meets Constantine. The special effects are phenomenal and the acting is great. The story line is intriguing and pulls you from one movie to the next, eventually leaving you drooling with anticipation for the third installment of the series (which regretably has yet to be released). We rented each of these to watch after reading an excellent synopsis of them and after we saw them once we watched them each again. They are in Russian, so if subtitles bother you, that might take away from your enjoyment. But they are such good movies!
I loved these movies so much I watched them a 3rd time in their native russian lang.. W/ english subtitles. These movies could best be described as a modern point of view of ancient metaphisical / magical abilities & mythologies. It is The best movie(s) of this kind I've ever come across. I liked how the english voices still had the thick russian accent it made every thing flow easier. SekerOsiris
