I especially loved the Little Princess. My whole family did, in fact. Even my husband thought it was good. I enjoyed the Secret Garden too, but the directors seemed to take more liberties with it than I would've preferred. These are particularly good movies to own if you have children, but they're definitely not your typical Disney-type movies. They're wholesome, but kind of unique - considering they're based on Frances Hodgsen Burnett's books, written at the turn of the 1900's. All in all, I recommend these movies for a refreshing change of pace in the circuit of movies that are being produced today.
I loved these books as a child. I know them very well. These movies are both very well done. But the story lines veer from the books in some very important aspects. This is why I cannot give them 5 stars.

"A Little Princess" is a great family film that teaches the importance of sharing, persevering, humility, overcoming adversity, understanding differences in others, and so much more. The story centers around Sarah, a little girl who has to go to boarding school while her father fights in the war. When Sarah learns that her father has allegedly passed away, she is stuck at the boarding school with the horrid head mistress, Miss Minchin, who seems to have a personal quarrel with Sarah. Now, Sarah has to overcome harsh treatment and the loss of the financial comforts she once had while her father was alive. Can Sarah do it? Moreover, “The Secret Garden” is also a nice movie. I must admit that I haven’t watched it recently to provide a sufficient review. At any rate, receiving both movies at such a great price is nothing short of a veritable deal.Read full review

I use The Secret Garden in teaching how to use art in the classroom for a local college. I have many versions of the book and all of the versions of the movies. This is the timeless Frances Hodgson Burnett story of how friendship awakens as the secret, walled garden turns from a dead place to one symbolizing hope. Issues of health being affected by nature, attitude making a difference, and life in late Victorian England make this a perfect family film. This is slightly different than the book, but for those who want an uplifting afternoon, this is for you. The Little Princess is also about an orphan child who goes from India to England and finds friendship and love through suffering hardship. Frances Hodgson Burnett always has a happy ending after much hardship. Two great classic movies for the price of one, you can't beat this!Read full review
Although I am middle-aged, these are two great movies (which I have loved for years) for the entire family. The main character in each movie does a stellar performance. Supporting casts are well chosen and the directing and cinematography in each is very well done. Highly recommended, especially if you have young children or a sentimental streak as I do.
