This magical film was the runaway surprise winner of the Oscar for Foreign Film in the 60's, after Columbia Pictures rejected it as unsaleable. It had opened in three theaters, in New York, London, and Paris I believe, and became an instant success -- and has remained a cult favorite for the last 50 years. I went to an art house every year when it came around, and bawled my eyes out every time. It has the most miraculous little girl in the title role of a child abandoned by her father to an orphanage, with Hardy Kruger as a damaged flier with war amnesia. They form a bond and he sees her every Sunday. Everyone thinks he is her father and their love is innocent and sweet. He is every bit a child, just as she is. They are finally taken down by surrounding forces of middle class suspicion and repression just as there is a break-through in his amnesia. It is a tragedy of Greek proportions, and finally Criterion has given this poetic film the treatment it deserves. Beautiful.Read full review
