If you have one of these NEVER PERFORM A FIRMWARE UPDATE, or you might render it useless like I did. Then you will need to find and buy a used one, like i had to do because you realized you did not have any backups. It seem that the RAID used to mirror is a proprietary RAID for these machines that is not recoverable any other way then to buy the same NAS model. At the same time I bought a newer Netgear ReadyNAS. It is much quicker, quieter, and easier to setup then this model. You would be wise to buy the newer version than to get this model. The replacement I bought to recover my lost files worked flawlessly and is now being used as a backup for the new NAS drive.

My ReadyNAS wouldn't reboot one day and I needed to get to the data stored there in a RAID configuration. This used ReadyNAS worked perfectly. I was able to swap the disks from my old unit into this one and as soon as it booted up I was able to see all the data.

I had a previous Netgear NAS that the power supply went bad. I already have the Hard drive caddies. I just bought this as a replacement for it. I'm very happy.

I wouldn’t take one if it was free. Not worth risking your data. Run away!
