C'mon Tracy, take me with ya!
A very excellent novelization of the Warren Beatty film written by Max Allen Collins, dedicated to Dick Tracy comic artist Chester Gould. Richard "Dick" Tracy is a shrewd plainclothes cop in an unnamed and colorful Depression-era city, who has vowed to stomp out crime. Not help matters is that after he intervenes in the beating of a vagrant child, Tracy and his girlfriend Tess Trueheart find themselves suddenly with custody of the boy, a smart-mouth street urchin nicknamed simply "the Kid." In the meantime, mob boss Al "Big Boy" Caprice rubs out his rival Lips Manlis and takes control not only of Lips' night club but also Lips' girlfriend, Breathless Mahoney, and begins a scheme to unite all of the city's crime lords under his own rule. Complicating matters is a mysterious new villain in town, a literally faceless villain who calls himself "the Blank," who seems eager to rub out both Tracy AND Big Boy. Collins' novelization is, like the film, colorful and exciting, with quite a bit of interesting backstory on the various characters - Bug Bailey has a fear of insects despite his nickname, and Pruneface's sour-faced associate "the Influence" was once a carnival hypnotist, explaining his name. There's a few differences here and there, most notably the ending. The movie is old enough by now that most people who've seen it ought to know the Blank's identity; namely that "he" is actually Breathless Mahoney in disguise. This is not in Collins' novel however. Breathless just sort of disappears towards the end, and after being shot and killed, the Blank is not unmasked. It is implied that his featureless face is indeed real, and we never learn who he really is or what exactly his motivates were. There's some discussion throughout the book of the possibility that the Blank is someone named Frank Redrum, an old rival of Big Boy's, but when Big Boy broaches the subject, he learns that Redrum is (supposedly) dead, and nothing more comes of the matter. The reason for the change is obvious. As with Jason White crushing one of Lex Luthor's henchmen with a piano in Superman Returns, the revelation that the Blank was Breathless (who is played by Madonna) is a major plot twist. A Blank action figure was pulled from stores around the same time because the "blank face" mask could be removed to reveal a likeness of Breathless/Madonna underneath. Collins obviously changed the ending at the behest of the studio who didn't want audiences who'd read the book to guess the twist. Having Breathless not be the Blank and survive, with the Blank indeed being a real faceless man, is actually a little bit more interesting than what the film gave us. I confess to never liking the twist, and would've preferred the Blank remain a separate character from Breathless, and Collins' novel provides this. So all in all, a decent read.
