This amplifier caught my attention because of two things: 1.) Multi-zone (three was the perfect number for my setup) and 2.) Class D amplifier. Well, item 2 may not be true. I'm an engineer, so I took the lid off. The amplifier components I see do not look anything like a Class D amp. It looks all the world like a classic A/B design. Which is good for sound, but not for the aspect of "It's in a closet and just leave it on all the time - it won't generate waste heat and won't overheat itself." So that's a bummer. If you want an amp that draws very little power at zero-output...this isn't the amp for you. It draws 30Watts of power with all three channels on and no source connected. But the good thing is, you can connect it to a wired remote controller (the manual includes diagrams on how to connect Xantech or Niles hardware) and turn it on/off from the room where the speakers are. Also includes a Status indicator so you know if the zone is on or off. Sound-wise, it's fabulous. I was using the little no-name $20 Class D amps from the Other Online Store and they were extremely bad sounding (caveat - I'm a bit of an audio snob.) I chose a good brand and Marantz did not disappoint. They are a well respected audio company and this amplifier follows that reputation. I'm still quite happy with it, especially for the price I paid. The power consumption is a bit of a bummer, but I'm willing to part with that for audio quality.Read full review

The Marantz ZS5300 is okay. Feature wise it is awesome, each zone has the ability to be powered on and off separately, select between 3 shared inputs or have a direct input for that zone, and you can adjust the volume level independently per zone. The downside of the system is that it has a very noisy fan, so if you are using it outside of an equipment room it will be distracting. Also the quality/power of amplification is okay. I used this as a way to connect Sonos to a number of in ceiling speakers in a couple of shared zones. Feature wise it is perfect for this application.

I own two of these units to power my audio throughout my house. I don't have keypads, just rotary volume controllers in each room. I really like that each pair of channels on the ZS5300 is independent and can be left powered off if I'm not using that one. I have these connected to my 2nd zone, so I can listen to something else while the main zone (family room) is in use. They drive JBL in-ceiling speakers mostly and have plenty of clean power available. Since I didn't need some fancy switching solution, these are perfect for what I wanted.
Great and easy to use product
