    MacKenna's Gold dvd

    I love the story of this movie. It has no flaws on the presentation and the disc is in great condition. This is an old movie that still carries a great message. Gold is great but it can bring about hate and greed, sugar coated with avarice.

    Mackenna's Gold (DVD, 2000)

    Marshall Sam MacKenna (Gregory Peck) is forced to lead a group of bandits led by Colorado (Omar Sharif), better known as the Laughing Outlaw. MacKenna has been told the location of a fabled canyon of gold for which many have hunted for years. It is sacred to the Apaches, and nobody who has ever been there was allowed to escape except one, and he was blinded. Colorado has big ideas of being a nobleman in Europe with his wealth. Colorado has a girl that he has taken as a hostage. Her father is a judge. This movie is based upon the legend of the Lost Adams Mine. Adams was a miner who stumbled on the canyon and said that there were gold streaks ten feet wide and fifty feet high in the rock, and had claimed to have collected about 100 lbs of nuggets just lying on the ground.     Why Not Widescreen?

    Sprawling western adventure with a great cast. Effects are somewhat dated after half a century, but still solid storytelling. And a wonderful score by Quincy Jones. Why this wasn't released in widescreen is beyond me. I bought the 4 film set after, just to have the best presentation.

    Old Favorite

    Good chemistry between Peck and Sharif with an ample assist from a star studded cast. I remember watching this as a young teen kid. Developed an instant crush on the damsel in distress Camila Sparv. Actually that might be why I liked this movie so much.
