The small space between the door isn’t that large and it’s meant to be there to allow some heat out of the fryer. The shelves are excellent. It’s easy to clean it cooks fast it cooks evenly best thing ever.. once you get used to adjusting the time and temperature from the default settings, it’s a breeze
