About this product

Product Information

"This is a riotous story which is reasonably mad and as accurate as a Marx brother can make it. Despite only a year and a half of schooling, Harpo, or perhaps his collaborator, is the best writer of the Marx Brother. Highly recommended." -Library Journal "A funny, affectionate and unpretentious autobiography done with a sharply professional assist from Rowland Barber." -New York Times Book Review

    Great read

This is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. And I have read a lot. It is letting me know about him as a man not just a performer. And I'm falling in love with him as a person. My only sad thing about the book is that one day I'll be done reading it. I'll probably read it over and over.

  • Wish I'd known Harpo!

What a wonderful book. Aside from being very, very funny and painful in turn, this book captures so many atmospheres: the hardscrabble existence in NYC (his telling of certain experiences echo stories I heard from my relatives about growing up on the Lower East Side in the early 1900s), the hilarity of Marx family life, the unpredictable experiences in vaudeville, and life among celebrities, whether in Hollywood or at the Algonquin Round Table. The photos are priceless. Groucho may have been the most obviously funny Marx brother, but this book makes me wish I'd known Harpo personally. I've already reread parts of it, and I imagine I'll go back to it many more times.

  • A good gift

My wife will enjoy it she has seen Harpo perform and love him he was refreshingly funny

  • Harpo, Harpo, Harpo,... you wag, you

Once you open the cover and begin reading, you are hooked. Who would have known that Harpo, and his brother's, engaged in outrageous antics off-screen. Quite a few of his exploits were down right risqué, yet uproariously funny. Rising above an impoverished childhood, the Marx brothers (with their slapstick movies) helped to distract people from the wretchedness of the Depression years. Harpo Speaks is one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. I cannot recommend it enough.

  • The first time Harpo told his story

My mother had this book when I was young but it went missing. She loved it and the stories of all the Marx brothers throughout their lives. Harpo was a special man and she found him wonderful to read about. I bought a copy of this issue for both of us as well as Harpo Speaks of New York. They are truly wonderful books to read for their insights into the Marx brothers, the remembrances of another age and the chance to get to know the silent Marx brother.
