About this product

Product Information

A collection of Stanislav Szukalski's portraiture works, including essays and background on many of the artworks. Inner Portraits provides a major survey of Szukalski's work as draftsman, painter, and sculptor. This is a new edition: upgraded, expanded, and newly re-designed. Many images and texts in this edition have never been published before. Szukalski is now the subject of the critically acclaimed 2018 Netflix documentary Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski directed by Irek Dobrowolski and produced by Leonard DiCaprio.

Like some artistic Superman, Szukalski had the powerto beamthrough his subject's skin, muscle, bone, and brain andpull out their naked soul for closer inspection. These inner portraits reveal an awesometalent, - Edwin Pouncey,co-editor of Montague Summers: Antinous and Other Poems|9780867198799|, I am amazed and intimidated by these portraits everytime I look at them (which is often). To watch Szukalski'sprodigious genius expand, undaunted by success orindifference (mostly the latter), over the span of 60+ years is remarkable and moving. -Dan Clowes, artist, "I am amazed and intimidated by these portraits every time I look at them. • I think the large metaphoric bronze hand was named "Struggle"

His brain never seemed to slow. Extremely opinionated , he had designed a social system based on consistencies he discovered throughout various cultures . These annotated portraits are just one example of his breadth .of skill and thought. Like Dore' he was a child prodigy .

  • Great book for even those not necessarily interested in art.

Great snapshot of a tumultuous time in history as seen through the faces that the artist has chosen to interpret.

  • Compilation of Szukalski portraits works

Loved it! He drew in various different styles, but there’s an underlying principle of caricature. A great reference book for me!
