About this product

Product Information

The most famous work of Japanese literature is the eleventh-century Tale of Genji by a woman of the imperial court. Out of the life and work of Murasaki Shikibu, arguably the world's first novelist, Liza Dalby has woven a delicate and irresistible fiction. She evokes Murasaki's close family, the men and women she loved, the vortex of high politics she was drawn into at court, the way in which Murasaki came to write her masterpiece, and above all the relationship to her own fictional creation, the Shining Prince Genji. Piecing together existing fragments of diary and poems, Dalby frames Murasaki's words and images in a gorgeous work of literary archaeology, where the subtle reconstruction blends with eleventh-century sensibilities, manners, fashions and preoccupations, and includes the imaginary lost final chapter of Murasaki's magnum opus. The result is a vivid portrait of the woman and the times that were the most splendid in Japanese history. The Tale of Murasaki has that rare ability to transport the reader to a different place and another time, to create an exotic world where we can identify completely with the eleventh-century heroine.

The book is in "reasonable" condition! not vg condition as described- front cover permanent fold over on arrival, packed this way ? pages are yellowing. Seller may be best to place a description "proper" of actual book being sold on the listing with photos so buyers know what they are receiving for the price paid.

  • My favourite book of all time.

One of the best books I've read. It's an easy read. Historical fiction. Written by Liza Dalby, the first Western Geisha and expert on Japanese culture. I especially loved the incense and perfume competition! I thought it was so amazing that people collected natural ingredients, cured them and then had an ancient style "bake off" but with scents! Just such a fun idea that every part of one's appearance from robe, hair length and scents were taken so seriously + had so much meaning. I loved that it details the introduction of tea by the Chinese into Japan, the reaction of the Japanese to meeting the Chinese and Korean traders in the 11th century. It's all so interesting both historically as well as the personal stories of the main characters. There's a lot of sadness and grief. But it's ...
