About this product
Product Information
America’s rich history can be shown through its many coins. The 1945 silver Mercury dime is no exception. You can hold a piece of United States history with a 1945 Mercury dime purchase. The U.S. Mint struck the Mercury dime coins from silver beginning in 1916 until 1945. The dime is referred to as the Mercury dime because citizens confused the young Liberty figure on the coins with the Roman god Mercury. The Mercury dime coin has a value of 10 cents. The 1945 Mercury dime coin weighs 2.5 grams and is comprised of .90 parts silver and .10 parts copper. The silver Mercury dime coin was designed by Adolph Weinman. The Mercury dime is also referred to as the winged Liberty head dime. The Mercury dime coin’s silver obverse features the winged Liberty head that was often mistaken for the Roman god Mercury. However, unlike Mercury, the young Liberty figure can be identified by her winged Phrygian cap that is featured on the coins. While the exact identity of the woman who posed for Weinman is unknown, many believe the designer used Elsie Stevens, the wife of lawyer and poet Wallace Stevens, as a model for Lady Liberty. Also on the coin’s obverse are the words and phrases “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” alongside Lady Liberty and the year of mint, 1945. The Mercury dime’s reverse depicts a Roman fasces, a bundle of rods. In the center of the rod bundle is a rod that acts as an ax. The fasces symbolize unity and strength, and an olive branch that is also depicted on the reverse signifies peace, ideals Americans value. The reverse also features a mintmark, with coins that were minted in Philadelphia missing a mintmark. Along the coins’ reeded perimeter of the reverse are the words “United States of America” and “One Dime.” The silver Mercury dime has a reeded edge that features 118 reeds on its small surface. American and international coin collectors alike can love to add the 1945 Mercury dime coins to their collections. The 1945 Mercury dime can also be significant because it is the last edition of its kind to be minted. This fact can add extra value to these already beautiful silver coins. While the Mercury dime coin was admired for its beauty, it had to be modified because vending machine manufacturers were having difficulties making the coins work in their devices. The Mercury dime was restruck in gold coins to celebrate its centenary in 2016.
