    • Props Are Hit Or Miss

Ideally, a boat propeller should, at WOT, generate the maximum RPM the motor is rated for. The present prop 13.25x17 on my pontoon boat at WOT is running 4800 RPM. The engine is rated for 5250 RPM. So I bought a lower pitch prop knowing it would run at higher RPM. But the prop was .25 less in diameter in addition to being 4 bladed and 15 pitch. It turned out running at 6000 at WOT, so it over revved the engine and I had to return it. Before I bought it I found calculations on line that predicted it would increase the RPM by 500 revs. But I learned the hard way, you can't accurately predict these things due to other factors such as the design, etc. I'm not saying this prop is bad, only that it more than doubled the predicted RPM increase.
