This book provides a working background for PC users who currently have problems with floppy or hard disk drives, or who want to be prepared to deal with an emergency of this type. The book begins by looking at both hard and floppy drive types in current use - their physical structure and organization and the way that they operate and store data. It then goes on to look at the sort of problems which can occur with disks, such as accidental formatting, mechanical or electronic problems with drives, or even the effect of hot coffee on a floppy disk. A section deals with the effects of virus programs on disks and their isolation, identification and eradication. The current range of software which can be used for recovery from disk disasters and data loss is fully reviewed. The recovery of data from damaged, failing or potentially faulty disks is then covered, with the aid of conventional DOS recovery tools as well as the more sophisticated programs such as PC-Tools or Norton Utilities. Many such problems can be sorted out rapidly and often successfully if the right software or procedures are used at the appropriate time. The theme throughout the book is one of preventative maintenance, whether through regular backups of data, or by keeping the drives and magnetic media in good condition.
