This is a review of both the A&E and the BBC episodes. There were only 12 episodes of Agatha Christies' Miss Marple ever written and dramatized. There have been at least three versions produced, but for me Joan Hickson is the real Miss Marple. Agatha Christie herself picked Joan for the part. I had watched the series on ACORN TV and liked it so much that I decided to buy the collection, but am not entirely pleased with what was available. The 1st, 3rd and 4th episodes are not included in the A&E production, so I had to buy the complementary BBC production to complete the set. But both the A&E and BBC productions suffer from two problems 1) the transfer to DVD is not very good when compared with the ACORN TV which is much clearer, and 2) neither A&E or BBC included subtitles, while ACORN TV does. I find myself watching the ACORN TV version now rather than the DVDs when I go back to re-watch this series. I can only hope that one day Miss Marple will be included in the Criterion Collection. Its that good.Read full review

While the built-in packaging is not as easy to use as simple slim cases, this particular set of DVDs come the closest of any of the Miss Marples or Poirots I have seen (meaning only the David Suchet and Joan Hickson versions) to actually following the original story. While some portions of the story are removed (as always) for the sake of time, there is far less of the extraneous material that movie makers somehow feel inclined to replace it with. The Body in the Library and A Murder is Announced are the longest of the Joan Hickson Miss Marple movies, with 159 minutes each (about two and a half hours!), while A Pocketful of Rye is about average length, at 103 minutes. The first two are the ones that are much more faithful to the story. A Pocketful of Rye is well-done, but a little more inclined to follow the example of the earlier Miss Marples by adding material. (As often as this is done, it must be popular with most people, but I usually have to watch it after I've forgotten all the details of the book to avoid irritation.) One thing that might annoy some is that the shows were originally broken into 2 or 3 parts each to air on TV. Those breaks are still in existence, with the credits/intoduction being shown between each part. Still, on the whole, I very much enjoyed this set, and would gladly recommend it to Agatha Christe fans.Read full review
'A Body in the Library' 'A Murder is Announced' 'A Pocketful of Rye' 3 OUTSTANDING Marple mysteries starring Joan Hickson - THE #1 Miss Marple!! Agatha Christie's friend who she herself said would be the best Miss Marple if Joan Hickson ever saw fit to play the part !! These are not easily found in conjunction with any other Marple mysteries because each is a 3-part film. So, as a boxed set, this is quite a find!! If you are an Agatha Christie or murder mystery buff, you will find no better than the quiet, old, unsuspecting,....RAZOR sharp minded,...Miss Jane Marple!!!
I love Agatha Christie and Joan Hickson was the ultimate Miss Marple. I will always remember the line when the police detective said "she has the mind of a bacon slicer.'.

MIss Marple's character is very eccentric, like some English people from the 50's. I love watching those dvd's!
