  • great for the aspiring writer

I bought this book for my creative writing class in college. It's really great, filled with interesting techniques, hints, prompts, and examples to help you with writing. It has tons of suggestions for people who keep journals and a wide variety of good secondary material to read at the end of each chapter so you can see the same techniques talked about in-chapter at work in published fiction. My only problem with it is that my particular book had some kind of printing error so that 31 pages from one chapter ended up lodged in the middle of another, but this printing error is an anomaly and not the rule: everyone else's books that I've seen are in the correct order, so it's just my luck I think.

  • Writing Fiction by E. Stuckley-French, J. Burroway

Assigned as mandatory class reading, the college bookstore charged more for the book than they charged tuition for the class. I decided to see if I could find it used. Using Ebay I reduced the price of the book by one half plus it arrived in the time and condition advertised. Writing Fiction is comprehensive and probably considered THEE book on creative writing. On one hand, it reads likes a school text as it is focused on the technical aspects of writing. On the other, it is clear and entertaining; including multiple examples for each topic. I have read many books on the craft of writing. Writing Fiction is the best. A great learing tool for anyone serious about the craft of writing. I highly recommend it.

  • New Slants on Fiction

While the fiction writers out there in cyberland might find this book old hat, Burroway's approach here is unique. She and her writing partner have conjured up new approaches toan perspectives on the theories of fiction writing, and these should resonate quite well with newbies and veterans alike. It's a good book to have on the shelf, to lean on when you have misgivings regarding your writing. For the student, it's equally valuable to learn from, in an undistorted manner.
