An intricate plot that keeps you guessing throughout. Realist, flawed, and highly original characters (lots of them) draw you into the action. Perhaps best of all--if you're a fan of museums--are the descriptions of the inner workings of the New York Museum of Natural History. By the end of the book, it felt as if I'd worked at the museum for twenty years. It's remarkable.

I bought this book as a replacement for a paperback copy. Preston and Child are superb writers. They are intelligent, scary, witty, and imaginative. This is the first book in a great series featuring Special Agent Pendergast. Pendergast is an unusual gentleman, who is so radical he should be fired from the agency. At the same time, his strangness is so brilliant, his wealth so staggering, his success so astonishing, that no FBI Director would consider firing him. The characters interact very well and the story line holds your attention. Reading the novels written by these two gentlemen has lead me to an exploration of many subjects I had not considered reading before. It is true, you can learn from well written fiction. There were two things I didn't like about the book. First, their writing makes the movie version of the book look incomplete. Secondly, I now have to budget for more of their books. I would recommend this book to any mature person who wants a really good literary ride. I would not recommend it to those who are afraid of the dark.Read full review
Thank you for this book. I had been looking for a hardback copy for quite some time, but I could not find one for less than $100. You have filled out my collection by these authors. I will be keeping you in mind for future purchases.

This is the first story about A.X.L. Pendergast. Be glad there are many more. Relic takes place in The New York Museum of Natural History and features brilliant characters, praise worthy dialogue, and shoulder scrunching suspense. No spoilers here, but I think of this and subsequent tales as "pseudo-science." Probably won't happen, but well-written enough to be believable. I bought the hardcover because I destroyed my paperback rereading. I now have all the Pendergast novels in hardcover because I will be reading them til I die. With luck, this death will not take place in the spookiest basement ever, perpetrated by a... You'll never be comfortable in a natural history museum again. PS:Skip the movie based on this book. It's like trying to compare apples and crap.
