About this product

Product Information

In the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series, Harry Dresden's investigation of a grisly double murder pulls him into the darkest depths of magical Chicago... As a professional wizard, Harry Dresden knows firsthand that the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things--and most of them don't play well with humans. And those that do enjoy playing with humans far too much. He also knows he's the best at what he does. Technically, he's the only at what he does. But even though Harry is the only game in town, business--to put it mildly--stinks. So when the Chicago P.D. bring him in to consult on a double homicide committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name... "A great series--fast-paced, vividly realized and with a hero/narrator who's excellent company."-- Cinescape

Praise for the Dresden Files "Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Philip Marlowe."-- Entertainment Weekly "Fans of Laurell  K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series."-- Midwest Book Review   "Superlative."-- Publishers Weekly (starred review)   "One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves."-- Cinescape   "Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry's wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot."-- Booklist (starred review)   "What's not to like about this series'...It takes the best elements of urban fantasy, mixes it with some good old-fashioned noir mystery, tosses in a dash of romance and a lot of high-octane action, shakes, stirs, and serves."-- SF Site   "A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel's TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner."-- Library Journal   "What would you get if you crossed Spenser with Merlin? Probably you would come up with someone very like Harry Dresden, wizard, tough guy and star of [the Dresden Files]."-- The Washington Times, Praise for the Dresden Files "Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Philip Marlowe."-- Entertainment Weekly "Fans of Laurell K. • A good series that keeps getting better!

These books were recommended to me by a friend and once I started reading them I was completely taken with the way the author handled the use of wizardry in modern Chicago and by the main character, Harry Dresden himself. Some of the secondary characters such as Bob the Skull are every bit as charming. Others have compared this to early books in the Anita Blake series and I agree, but I like them even more and unlike Anita, Harry has not lost his edge. I read all 7 books I could get hold of in a matter of perhaps a week and a half I was so enchanted. I particularly recommend this series to any fans of the old White Wolf World of Darkness games, not because of any real similarity of style but because it also handles concepts of Changelings, Vampires and Werewolves as well as wizards in the ...

  • Wacky weather in Chicago brings more than just rain.

This is the first book of seven in a series about a detective named Harry Dresden. He also just happens to be a wizard. May sound strange, but I thought that particular aspect added a lot to the character. He is drawn into a situation of dramatic proportions and solves the case by the end of the book! This first book of the series takes more time to explain everything that has to do with Dresden and how he lives his daily life as a wizard in the real world set in Chicago. He loves Chicago and that's why he stays, but trouble calls him out consistantly. He gathers some friends that show up in later books so it's good to have read this one first, but not completely necessary. The author takes time in each book to explain a little so if one hasn't read this first book can catch on, but not ...

  • Storm Front

Harry Dresden is Chicago's only professional wizard. As you can guess, he doesn't get many serious calls. That's why he jumps at the opprotunity when his friend Murphey that works for the Chicago P.D. calls him in as a consultant on a strange murder case. A scared woman also purchases his services to help her find her husband. Little did he know that these cases would pit him against some of the most powerful enemies he has ever faced. Storm Front is an exciting, fast paced novel that is hard to put down. Dresden may be a powerful wizard but, he has all the human weaknesses and frailties. He makes for a wonderful partner through this wild story that is a mix between an adult Harry Potter and CSI. I highly recommend this book to all fantasy and mystery novel fans. It hooks you from the ...

  • The Dresden files begins

I got started with the Dresden Files from the show, which has now been canceled but that's another story. I began reading the books because I enjoyed the characters in the show. The characters in the book are different but you can fit most of them easily into the books. The character of Dresden is just like the show and the actor was perfect. This first book is a lot of fun and a good read but it isn't as good as the ones that follow. It is very much like Harry Potter for adults. If you like Fantasy, Sci-Fi, horror, you'll probably enjoy this book. I have lent it to several people and they are all now hooked on the series. I look forward to each new book and they all started here. Read about the only registered Wizard in the US, living and working in Chicago, helping the police ...
