fast older lens
this lens is perfect for image quality but according to the experts is slow focusing they should also say on some cameras this lens focuses fast enough on the D500 and D3/4/5 nikons to be very handy on a dx format it is 600mm equivalent and great for surf shots. Image stabilization is good and its easy to hand hold at full zoom 10/10 lens

First of all the lens I am reviewing is the AF-S 80-400mm F4.5-5.6G VR not the old "D" model. The lens is outstanding especially wide open at 400mm. To my eyes it is the step before a high end telephoto in the Nikon range. Colors are fantastic, on a D4 the pairing is excellent, focus acquisition is super quick. The resolving power of this lens is brilliant. Forget about all those reviews on the Web, this is the real deal and I am very happy with my purchase.First of all the lens I am reviewing is the AF-S 80-400mm F4.5-5.6G VR not the old "D" model. A gem of a lens.
I used this lens on safaris in South Africa and boy does it do a good job. Images are sharp and contrasty. The VR seems to work well too in most circumstances. The lens is a little long in the tooth so would warrant an upgrade to the faster silent wave autofocussing on the latest Nikon lenses. Apart from that a real gem of a lens.
