First, I would only recommend this CD for fans of The Pixies or Frank Black himself. Those not familiar with the music contained on this double CD would find the music awkward. The first of the two CD's is one of the first know recordings of some early Pixie's songs. It's only Charles (Frank Black) and his guitar beating out the songs from deep within his soul. You can actually hear him "sing" some of Kim's basslines and Joey's guitar parts. It is very intense and soulful, unfortunately there really isn't any studio value as the recording had no engineering whatsoever (it really wasn't recorded to be released to the public). The sound is very "grass roots" and it's actually nice to hear some different recordings of very well known Pixies' songs. The second of the two CD's is a train wreck. Charles decided to rerecord some of the Pixies' biggest hits in a very overproduced way. He and two friends truly deconstructed and reconstructed these songs. The sound is more tech than soul, and Charles himself is even quoted saying, "I know I'm messing with Gospel...". Besides a song or two (Holiday Song and Subaculture) this CD really misses the mark. Overall I gave the CD's a Good rating as it honestly is a must-have for any Pixie/Frank Black fan. Without an abundance of music from the Pixies, it's nice to have multiple recordings of those songs they did produce.Read full review
