    Gritty, well written, well acted and beautifully photographed TV Western. Buy it. You won't regret it.

    The "Dakotas" is a top TV western from the 50s/60s genre. In my opinion, the best. It only has 20 episodes-one season-before it was canceled for being too gritty for the times. It was ahead of it's time by about 5 years. It's more Sam Peckinpah than John Ford. Fans will especially enjoy Jack Elam as gunfighter JD Smith. The DVD discs themselves are very good. The aspect ratio is slightly off at 1:37:1 (full screen) but not as severe as 1:33:1 where everyone is fat and the horses look like dachshunds. The clarity is top notch as is the sound. This show was beautifully photographed and so well written you will not confuse it with any other TV westerns of the era. If you want to see what TV westerns of the 50s/60s could have been, this is your show.

    Complex dark Western

    I don't remember this Tv series when I was younger but it's a hidden gem it's kinda dark but engaging with some excellent acting, the standout actor being Jack Elam !!

    Classic Character-based Western

    Each of the twenty episodes in the Dakotas tv series could stand on its own as a character-driven study with moral conflict, ambiguity, mistaken intents, false accusations and the demand of the law. One of the best episodes is called "A Man Called Ragan" which gives the background for each of the four main roles. Jack Elam's role was one of his favorite. Bottomline: Nice DVD packaging and good storytelling.
